Candidate Bios for the 2013 – 2016 Colorado Region SCCA Board of Directors

Michelle McColl

If you know me, you may have heard my motto: No Rest for The Wicked! On that note, I’m asking for your vote for re-election to the Colorado Region BOD.

I’m a Colorado native and grew up in Pueblo. I attended the University of Northern Colorado, where I met Karl, my husband of 29 years. I started my Real Estate career in 1987 and have been managing my own business ever since.

Karl and I been members of Colorado Region SCCA since 1989. You may not know that I was the first official racer in the McColl Family. My first event was a Solo in a 1984. I won my class in a Buick Regal T-Type at the Denver Coliseum parking lot. I should mention though, it was a single car class. Later I raced a Chrysler Conquest TSI, winning the 1990 RM Solo Championship Series in G Stock, where I beat the “Boys”.

In addition to Solo, I’ve held an SCCA Competition Road Racing license. However, I realized that being in the race car was Karl’s passion and that what I enjoyed most about racing was THE EVENT; Racing, camaraderie, and fun.

To that end I’ve volunteered my time to Colorado Region in many capacities.

  • 2005 – 2006 Culinary Chief at the Denver Grand Prix
  • 2007 – 2009 Secretary to the Board (non-board seat)
  • 2010 Board Member and Secretary
  • 2010 – 2012 Chief of Race Administration
  • 2011 – 2012 Regional Executive Colorado Region

In 2006 Karl and I received the Les Gaylord Family of the Year Award (in honor of an involved and dedicated racing family). In 2010 I received the Drive to Excellence Award for going above and beyond for the region. Mostly though, the smiles on the faces of
Drivers and Volunteers at an event are my reward.

I am seeking another term on the board. My goal is to hand over the reins as RE and work as a member at large. My action plan items for this term include:

  1. Marketing Colorado Region Racing Programs
  2. Securing Sponsorship for 2013 Racing Events
  3. Increasing the VIP – Volunteer Incentives Program
  4. Securing a Super Tour for Colorado Region in 2013
  1. Growing Participation at Colorado Region Events (Drivers, Volunteers, & Spectators)

I’m fiscally conservative, detail oriented, and I am willing and capable of doing the hard work for the furtherance of the club.

Jim Leithauser

James Leithauser, also known to enter races as JIMbob

College: Mechanical Engineering

I have been auto-x’ing since 1976, and joined the SCCA in 1980. I am a lifetime SCCA member. I served as Kentucky Region Regional Executive, and was Activities Chairman in the early 1980’s. I was part of the Field Staff team for SCCA National Tours and Pro-Solo’s from 1986 until the end of 1993.

I relocated to Denver in 1993, in order to take a position with theSCCA as manager of technical issues within the Solo Department. In the fall of 1993, I was hired by SCCA Club Racing, to the position of Technical Manager.

In 1995 I earned my National License while racing in ITA. With lots of hard work, and with Bob Endicott driving, I engineered and crew chief’d the car to the ARRC Championship in 1998.

When the SCCA relocated to Topeka in 1999, I resigned my post as Technical Manager, and moved to SoCal to take a position with Tri-Point Engineering. I changed my focus from IT to SSB and participated in several races through the 1999 season.

In 2000, I returned from SoCal (man is that place expensive) to Colorado, to open Bimmerhaus with Bob Tunnell. I continue to work with Bob at Bimmerhaus, where we specialize in BMW’s, and can work on race cars of any sort. I have also served as Bob’s tire warmer for SCCA Nationals in recent years finishing 2nd to Bob on several occasions.

I served as a member of the Club Racing Board from 2001 through 2003. In 2004, all the hard work of being a SSB competitor paid off with a class win and National Championship at Runoff’s. (Who says you can’t buy a Championship?)

I have recently worked as Crew Chief for Dan Spirek and Jason Ott in SM 2006-2008, podium at Runoffs 2007. The team is currently developing Z4’s for the Touring class, attended June Sprints, and will be heading to Runoff’s come September.

I am currently serving on the board of directors for the SpecM3 class under development, and am actively working to promote SpecM3 class along the Front Range. I have driven my own SpecM3 in several Club Trials and regional races this season. I am excited to have a track as spectacular as HPR within our region, and spent several days there this past winter bolting tires together along with many of our region’s members.

I am standing for the CO region BOD, and believe my years of experience as a driver, a SCCA employee, a race car owner, and a crew chief/engineer give me insight into running successful events. I have previously served as RE in the Kentucky region so understand the dedication, good clear communicating skills and diplomacy needed to successfully serve on the BOD. As a participant in auto-x, Club Trials, and Road Racing, I am in touch with most of the competition aspects within our club.

I respectfully ask for your support and vote, and promise to serve on the BOD to the best of my ability.

Yours faithfully,

James Leithauser

For those of you who don’t know me, I am retired from a life without a heart, having been in the car business since the 1970’s. I am not fully retired, as I recently obtained my CDL (Commercial Drivers License) to do some side work driving car haulers to different race tracks. I have two sons, Jason & Steve Ott, my wife and best friend is Carole.

My qualifications for the Board of Directors for the Colorado S.C.C.A., are as follows. I have been a general manager of some very large dealerships, where over 600 cars per month were sold, ran my own wholesale and retail used car dealership, and most recently managed a service department at one of the leading Import service centers in Boulder County. This gives me many years experience in dealing with people and their different opinions, and being able to medaite those differences. It also has given me leadership and decision making skills necessary to make a large organization function for the best possible results for its membership. The fact that I am “semi retired” gives me the necessary time to devote to issues that will promote future growth of the club and sustain this growth for many years to come.. I have been a S.C.C.A. Member since the 1970’s, although I will admit my membership has lapsed on occasion. I have experience working racing events since the 1960’s, starting with the Pennsylvania Hill Climb Association in 1964. I have also been a licensed driver in S.C.C.A, and N.A.S.A. This experience gives me the ability to look at “both sides of the coin” when it comes to issues that may affect the S.C.C.A., club members.

I ask for your vote in the upcoming Colorado Region Board of Directors election.

Your fellow S.C.C.A member, Dave Ott

Born and raised in Colorado, I spent several years as a “corporate gypsy” moving around with UPS, then returned to Colorado in the late 1980’s. My professional life has revolved around transportation in some form or fashion. I have run large trucking companies, and worked in the international freight business, actually helping to import cars and parts for SCCA Enterprises at one point. For the last 9 years I have worked for an employee leasing company that offers payroll and worker’s compensation solutions to the transportation industry. I like to think that my history of managing and working with lots of different personalities and business have given me some skills and knowledge that is helpful.

My racing experience started in the 1970’s when a neighbor of mine introduced me to Formula Fords, I went to the Danny Collins School, got my regional and national licenses. I married and had children which put an end to my racing endeavors; with a promise to myself I would return someday. I was able to do that in 2000, returning to drive a Formula Continental car, and then purchasing an FE car. I have also raced oval track cars including midgets with the RMMRA, but road racing is still my favorite.

I have served on several boards and committees over the years, both on the professional side (Truckload Carriers and Colorado Motor Carriers) as well as community involvement. I served a 1 year term on the City of Fort Collins Planning and Zoning Appeals board, as well as a couple of HOA boards. I feel I have acquired lots of experience with these involvements, not the least of which is the ability to hear and understand challenges faced today by businesses and clubs.

Thank you all, for running for the 2013-2016 term of the Colorado Region SCCA Board of Directors, and Good Luck!
